The proposed extension wouldn’t add a fifth tier to allow people to receive benefits for more than 99 weeks. It would extend the availability of the lower tiers so that benefits don’t end for everybody over twenty-six weeks all at once.

Hm. Well, I did not know that, and I appreciate you bringing it to my attention. (Labor law is not my specialty, so I’m not familiar with the tier system.)

I guess we can debate about how long it is appropriate for the federal government to provide unemployment insurance, but I would just note that there’s a long time between 26 weeks and 99. Philosophically, I still maintain that just giving someone money for 6+ months after they lose their job is not good public policy, nor does it encourage them to get back into the labor market.
